Have you ever wondered if you’re getting enough action in the bedroom?
Interestingly, there is a number that represents the average frequency of sexual encounters… and it’s probably higher than you’d expect.
Back in 2022, a TikToker caused quite a stir when he shared what he called the “magic number.”
The revelation seemed a bit overwhelming for him and many others who felt they had some catching up to do.
In a video that quickly caught fire, Daniel Schaal (@thatschaalfolks) spoke directly to his viewers:
“The average person has sex 54 times a year or so, looks like the next few days are gonna be pretty crazy for me.”
This statistic sparked a lot of laughter on TikTok.
Quite a few users echoed his sentiment in their own humorous ways.
“I’m the reason it’s not 100 times a year lol,” joked one user.
Another commented, “I’m bringing down the average so you guys feel better about yourselves.”
And a third chimed in with, “Well someone here must be doing it 54 extra times to make up for me.”
These figures, sourced from the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, originate from a study conducted in 2017.
The research indicated that the typical individual engages in sexual activities roughly once a week.
This study noted that people were having sex less frequently than they were in a similar study from the 90s.
Further research published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science suggested that this weekly frequency might actually be the ideal for maintaining happiness.
Spanning over 40 years and involving more than 30,000 Americans, this extensive study found that having sex more than once a week doesn’t necessarily enhance happiness, though those who had it less frequently reported feeling less content.
The data, however, may have been influenced by the pandemic.
When lockdown measures initially rolled out, one silver lining seemed to be the potential boost in the sex lives of cohabiting couples.
Typically, a busy schedule is blamed for a lackluster sex life.
However, with the shift to working and managing all aspects of life from home, suddenly everyone had more time on their hands.
Many even speculated about a possible Covid-19 baby boom as sex turned into a favored pastime for couples stuck at home with little else to do.
But when condom sales started to drop in March, the head of Durex didn’t just point to decreased opportunities for singles.
He suggested that even those with more chances than before were engaging in less sex.
In an interview with the BBC, Laxman Narasimhan, the CEO of Reckitt Benckiser, which owns Durex, noted:
“What you see is this virus is having a toll on the number of intimate occasions in the UK.
“Intimate occasions are going down and that is a manifestation of anxiety.”
